Moving a reef 2000 miles

Ive been slowly breaking down different aquariums for the move. Last month I gave away some of my coral and fish. I also removed most of the live rock from my tanks.

Yesterday I cut and pried off the frags on my large pukani rock. I want to dry that rock out too. It’s a large centerpiece rock that weighs about five pounds and is about a foot wide. My starry blenny disagreed. He hid inside the rock and there was nothing I could do to dislodge him. Quite annoyed with him. I have him and the rock sitting in a ten gallon now. I’ll have to net him somehow.

Most of the coral I removed from the pukani rock I was able to take off without destroying them. All of it was zoanthids. Now my main twenty gallon looks like a frag tank. I hope I don’t lose too many of them during the move.

I know the smartest and sanest thing to do would just be to completely start over. Just sell or give away all of the livestock, but I just can’t do it. I’m too attached. I’m willing to take the risk of killing all of it because I have to. I’ve want a reef tank since I was a very small child. Now I have them it’s hard to give any part of it up. Zoas are pretty hardy though and I think they will survive.

Reef joy= new reef stores to check out!

After some googling, I found out that Portland has a large amount of ass-kicking reef stores. Yet another good reason to move there.

Here in Columbus we have one. One. I will have some awesome reefs after we are safe and settled in. Move is planned in mid June/ July.

Three month old Reef Tank

This tank is a ten gallon AGA with a 2x24w fishneedit t5HO light. I have about five pounds of sand in it. I also have five pounds of live rock and six pounds of dry rock. The bigger rock is the dry rock and it is from bulkreefsupply.com. Here are some photos:

Fester is not amused…

It is surprising hard to take photos of a creature that doesn’t move much. This is a macro shot with flash. The flash pissed him off and he buried himself in the substrate afterwords.

New shrimp and new bn coming soon.

This is an aquarium update, so feel free to skip if you are not interested.

I bought some shrimp online about a week ago. These are freshwater red cherry shrimp. Very cute, very easy to take care of. They arrived yesterday after being in the mail three days. All of them are tiny but in perfect health. I ordered ten on them but the seller give me thirteen or so. They don’t hold still and are hard to count. They came with some new plants that I promptly threw in the tanks.

After exchanging some emails with the seller, I bought more aquatic life. This time I bought three longfin albino bristlenose plecos. Two for the ten gallon with the corys and one for the six gallon shrimp tank. The seller assured me that the bn would be safe with the shrimp, but I’m a bit wary. Cherry shrimp are too expensive to be a snack for a catfish. He’s shipping those out on Monday, so I should get them by Wednesday at the lastest.

I’m a bit obsessed with planted tanks right now. It’s one of the reasons I’m willing to wait and stay here in Ohio until next year. I don’t want to have to start all over again.

I’m going to clear out some of the guppies in the ten gallon. The frogs will be pleased to have some living food.

new shrimp tank photos

This is my new six gallon eclipse tank. It has four cherry shrimp and maybe eight or nine ghost shrimp. The bastards are hard to photograph. These are the best shots that I could get.
